Try Something New In Kaikōura
Downhill mountain biking, brewing and paddling – there’s plenty to keep you busy in Kaikōura that doesn’t involve a boat.
The Kaikōura region is known for its unique mountains-meet-ocean landscapes, making it the perfect place to enjoy a host of activities.
There is way more to do in Kaikōura than just heading off shore and sampling seafood, though we do think that’s well worthwhile. Whether you’re keen to explore on two wheels (riding downhill amongst some pretty special scenery), sample locally brewed beer or make some new furry friends, you’ve got options in Kaikōura.
Our buddies at Neat Places have gathered these alternative options for you to explore.
Hapuku Kitchen Cooking Class
This is no standard cooking class. Hapuku Kitchen’s hands-on experience will connect you with Kaikōura’s land and sea. Prepare to come away appreciating food and where it comes from in a whole new way. Expect to find yourself either foraging for wild mushrooms, visiting nearby farms or learning to fillet a whole fish before gathering around a huge communal table to enjoy the fruits of your labour. A very unique and educational way to explore the region.
SUP hire from Kaikōura Surf Company
It wouldn’t be right to not include some sort of sea exploration into this Kaikōura guide, so here’s an alternative way to enjoy the deep blue. Head to Kaikōura Surf Co. and rent a paddleboard, walk it around the corner to the beach and hop on. This is an ideal way to explore the coastline while getting a workout. Wayne from Kaikōura Surf Co. told us people have had dolphins jump over their SUPs while on the water. It might not happen every time, but worth a chance right?
Emporium Brewing
Who doesn’t like trying a suite of local craft beers? Emporium Brewery is tucked down a drive off the main road and well worth discovering. Sample the latest brews Paul the brewer is working on, and take home a bunch of goodies to enjoy at your leisure. As if that wasn’t enough, whip around their mini-golf course or challenge yourself to an escape room experience. Awesome.
Middle Hill MTB
Middle Hill MTB is a must-visit destination if you’re keen for a bit of two-wheeled downhill speed. This mountain bike park covers some 18km over multiple tracks built on private property near the Clarence River. Escape from the crowds with Middle Hill MTB only taking bookings for up to 12 people at any one time. Views don’t get much better and the friendly pair behind this venture are always developing new runs to enjoy. There’s even on-site camping by pre-arrangement. Sign us up.
Harmon’s Motor Museum
Harmon’s Motor Museum is a must for the car enthusiast. They’ve got an impressive private collection of American cars from the 50s-70s. These stunners have been self-restored by Bernie and his father, and they’re also behind most of the street scenes. The in-house Bernie’s Diner serves American Diner style fare – milkshakes, fries, burgers, all that good stuff – so get down here for your car and American cuisine fix.
